GEO: how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity

Abstract illustration of data flows and code

Your customers no longer rely on Google alone: they ask ChatGPT “which agency should I choose in Agadir?”, ask Perplexity for the “best family hotel in Taghazout”, or read the AI-generated summary at the top of Google’s results. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) covers the techniques that improve the chances of your business being cited and recommended in these answers.

SEO and GEO: what is the difference?

SEO aims to rank your pages in a list of results; GEO aims to make your business a reliable source that the AI draws on in a written answer. The two overlap considerably — an AI search tool often relies on the best-ranked pages — but GEO places particular emphasis on clear facts, on the consistency of your “entity” and on mentions of your brand on other websites.

1. Allow AI crawlers in

Check that your robots.txt file does not block crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot (OpenAI), ClaudeBot and Claude-SearchBot (Anthropic), PerplexityBot or Google-Extended. Be careful: some services, such as Cloudflare, offer AI crawler blocking that may be switched on by default. An llms.txt file at the root of your website can also present your business and your key pages in a simple format that models can use directly.

2. Define your entity clearly

An AI must understand unambiguously who you are, especially if your name resembles that of another company. Use the same name, address, phone number and description everywhere; associate your brand with your city (“digital agency in Agadir”); mark up your website with Organization or LocalBusiness structured data, listing your official profiles (Google listing, LinkedIn, Facebook…).

3. Write content that is easy to quote

  • Open each page with a direct, factual answer, then go into detail.
  • Use headings phrased as your customers’ real questions, and FAQs.
  • Give precise, verifiable information: lead times, ranges, steps, local examples.
  • Structure the information: lists, tables, numbered steps.
  • Keep your pages up to date and show the date they were last updated.

4. Build up credible mentions

AI tools cross-check their sources. A business cited by the regional press, business directories, partners, review platforms and industry rankings is more likely to be recommended. Detailed customer reviews, particularly on Google, also play an important role in local recommendations.

5. Measure your visibility in AI tools

Regularly test the questions your customers ask (“best web agency in Agadir”, “who can build my e-commerce website in Morocco?”) in several assistants and note whether you are cited, and with which sources. In Google Analytics 4, track traffic coming from chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai or gemini.google.com: it is often low in volume but highly qualified.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. AI engines rely largely on content that ranks well and is well structured. GEO extends SEO with additional work on the clarity of information, brand identity and external mentions.

Can you pay to appear in ChatGPT’s answers?

The “organic” recommendations of AI assistants cannot be bought: they depend on the quality, clarity and reputation of your content. Any advertising formats on these platforms are separate from their organic answers.

What is the llms.txt file?

A text file placed at the root of the website (for example evisibility.ma/llms.txt) that summarises the company’s business and lists its essential pages, to help language models understand the site.
